Practice files for the 1791 concert, November 1, 2026
Here are the varied versions of the Domine Jesu and the Sanctus. I’m sending links to Spotify recordings, apologies if you don’t have Spotify, but you can most likely find them wherever you go to listen to music.
My preference is the John Eliot Gardner. It tends to be lighter, smaller orchestra, and less full blown romantic, which you will hear, especially in the Böhm recording.

In this work you will also hear different music as it was a different reimagining of the Sussmayr score done in 2016 by Pierre-Henri Dutron. Because it is thought that Mozart didn’t write any of the Sanctus, musicologists have adapted their own thoughts into what Mozart MAY have done. It is debated how much Mozart actually told Sussmayr about how he wanted the work finished. Sussmayr himself claims to have written all of the music to all of the Requiem beyond the Hostias (which concludes with the famous words “Da Capo Quom olim” which means go back to the beginning of the fugal section of Domine Jesu Christe). These may have been the last words Mozart ever wrote in a piece of music.
Another interesting recording to consider is by Nicolas Harnoncourt.
